Imagine this, my lovely biz besties…
You walk into a local café, excited to meet a new business buddy. But when you sit down, they mumble a bit and give you a vague, boring AF description of their job. You sit there waiting for more, but nothing comes...
And then, when you ask what they like to do for fun, they just shrug their plain little shoulders.
There’s no personality, no direction, zero connection whatsoever. It’s just you two, sitting in awkward, awkward, AWKWARD silence.
Sooooo, naturally, you make an excuse, get up and hot-tail it outta there. 😬
Because they (obviously) just don’t get you. Right?!
Well, that’s exactly how people feel when they land on a homepage that’s as boring as a piece of dry toast, one that’s as confusing AF, or… well… one that’s just plain unhelpful.
It’s true… if your target client finds you but doesn’t know what you do, who you help, or what they should do next, then, just like that weird meet-up in the cafe, they’re outta there, clicking off your website quicker than you can say “But wait, I'm awesome!”
Your homepage shouldn't be something that sends people running for the hills. It should be a warm, confident and welcoming introduction to who you are and all of the awesome things you do. It should be a page that leaves people soooo excited to work with you.
That’s why I’ve put together a list of the 10 must-have copy elements that your homepage needs to make a memorable AF first impression.
Are you ready? Because here's what you need:
#1. A H1 headline that packs a big ol' punch
Your headline is the first thing visitors see, so make sure it clearly states what you do and who you help. Think of it as your homepage’s pickup line (lol) - if it's boring, you'll be left alone in the metaphorical cafe from before...just youuuuu and a stale almond croissant. Blerk.
#2. A subheader that backs it up
Aaaah, I love a juicy subheader. Here you should include a supporting statement that expands on your H1 and tells people WHY they should care about your business. Because you are awesome. Just sayin'.
#3. A call to action (CTA) that is wayyy too good to ignore
Don’t leave people wondering what to do next!
Make it clear AF with a good (and clear) CTA.
Ps. While there is always a time and place for a basic CTA that says "Learn more here", bonus points if you can make your CTA more interesting, more enticing and absolutely clickable.
#4. A short ‘About’ section... because people are nosy little creatures
Make sure you toss in a quick intro to who you are, what you do, and why you’re awesome. No one needs your full life story - just knock their socks off with allll of the good stuff here. A couple of paragraphs should do.
#5. A little taster of your products or services
Make it easy for your clients or customers with a quick rundown of your products (best-sellers are great here!) or your amazing services. This keeps them from hunting around and quickly shows them that they're in the right place and that you've got EXACTLY what they need!
#6. Social proof... Coz this builds EPIC trust
Got a glowing review? Show it off. Big-name clients? Toss their logos into the mix! Social proof makes people feel safe, and the more they see that people LOVE you and your business, the safer they'll feel with you.
#7. Your USP (Your unique value proposition)
You need to let them know why they should choose you. You know, why you are so much better than the rest. Heck, even why you're the coolest of the cool. A few bullet points on why you’re different, better, or just cooler than the competition will be good here.
#8. A juicy lead magnet that KILLS!
Want to build an email list for your business? Offer a freebie that people actually want. Maybe...a list kinda like this one?
*Madly makes a note to turn this list into a lead magnet...*
#9. A final call to action (because people need reminders)
Don’t assume visitors will take action on their own - gently nudge them one more time to do what they found you for. Tell them to buy the thing, sign up for the thing, or download the thing. Simple right? And helpful, ta-boot!
#10. A footer with contact info & social links
This will make it easy for people to find you. Simple, yet effective. Because if they can't find you then how will they fall in love with you before working with you?
So. This leaves me with one more question.
